SCANS OF INSPIRATION

Redefining Beauty

‘Beautiful Ugly’ is a collection inspired by the everyday features of Thai street life, drawing on its textures, complex forms, and sophisticated patterns to inform fashion design. By focusing on the ‘not so luxury’ aspects of Thailand, the collection reimagines the overlooked and ordinary, transforming them into garments that highlight how the authenticity of Asian streets and cities can tell powerful stories.

The process of collecting first hand inspiration with a portable scanner (pictured to the left) has been incredibly important to this design process, underscoring the importance of story and authenticity. Instead of lazily retrieving images off the internet, I set out to capture my immediate surroundings to inspire this collection.

Inspired by Thailand’s nationally proclaimed “sky spaghetti”, tangle and thread draws from the shape, coordination of line and form within these messy subjects. Converting the form of jumbled up power lines from unsightly to sophisticated fashion designs highlights the beauty that can be found in the unassuming.

Material experimentation

Using flattened strips of cans, metal rubbish bags and a variety of scrap materials, I created this work in progress. Utilising the discarded things around me shows once again the beauty of the unassuming whilst also supporting my passion of sustainable creating with recycled materials.
